My experience at Kent State University as part of the Early Intervention Special Education cohort has taught me so many things. My experience also confirmed my thoughts of there needing to be certain level of passion required for the field. So much of what we learned focused on family routines and their natural environments. How can we as professionals empower these individuals to build upon the strengths they already have and advocate for themselves and their children when we are no longer there? We coach them...the coaching interaction style was recently adopted by the field of early intervention based on research of how adults learn best. In my opinion one of the best changes to date, this interaction style also greatly encouraged through the work at Kent State.
Some of the requirements for our course work at the university required a great amount of research, not only did we have to interpret the findings but we also had to apply the methods and conduct our own single subject research. We were required to become "experts" in related topics of our choice. The experience I've already had and knowing the impact on our population I focused my time and attention on Enhanced Milieu Teaching and Joint Attention.
-Enhanced Milieu Teaching is a group of evidenced based strategies that have been proven to encourage language development of children with all levels of communication delays. These strategies can feel and look so natural to the family and the child just feels supported in their environment.
